Here are the individual winners (so to speak) of the SPMTC (Southern Police Motorcycle Training Competition) event Sat 04/24/10; of course – ALL of the participants are winners…some were just a LITTLE faster!

KAWASAKI Class: MATT SLAUGHTER, MESA PD  average time 60.2 sec

BMW Class: ANDREW DREXLER, ALBUQUERQUE PD  average time 58.4 sec

HONDA Class: QUINN REDEKER, VENTURA PD  average time 54.3

HARLEY-DAVIDSON Class: DUAINE COWLEY, LAS VEGAS PD  average time 60.9

Class wise – HONDA 1st, BMW 2nd, KAWASAKI 3rd, and HARLEY-DAVIDSON 4th

Don’t have any TEAM competition results; maybe Stan can get them.

Although a TAD slower than the FOREIGN bikes – HARLEY is still the most comfortable machine – in my opinion – to spend 8-10 enforcement/patrol hours a day on! However – my enforcement/patrol was primarily higher speed FREEWAY (no slower speed surface streets/intersections) riding. And – I’m just an old (seriously) school traditional American made, American look, style, & sound motor officer of years long gone! Glad to see LVPD still believes in the HARLEY product; and boy – those LVPD guys are REALLY good considering the HD size and weight factor! And of course – the FOREIGN bikes can whip HD big time in the quickness and top speed category!

The first tour each day is of the world’s largest solar telescope, the McMath-Pierce solar telescope.

We have rescheduled our ride to Kitt Peak.  It will be on Saturday May 15th.  This is the week after our breakfast ride.

We will meet at McDonalds @ 8:00 am., Ajo and Kinney, for coffee and whatever.  We will then ride up to Kitt Peak and hopefully get a 10:00 a.m. tour of the telescope.

If you are interested in going please let Harry Barden know so he can have a head count and can coordinate a tour guide.

We will eat lunch afterwards @ Cindy Lou’s in Three Points on Ajo Rd.

If this ride goes well there are two other tours.  The next one starts @ 11:30, which we could do after breakfast.

On this tour you will visit one of the early workhorses of Kitt Peak. Built in 1964, the 2.1-m telescope is still in high demand every night.

The last tour is at 1:30.  We could eat lunch first then go to Kitt Peak for the last tour of the day.

This telescope has been a landmark in since 1973, and is easily visible from many points in Tucson. The 4-m is the largest optical telescope on Kitt Peak, and receives 4 times more requests for use than there are clear nights each year. From the Visitor Gallery you have a beautiful 360 degree view of Kitt Peak and surrounding landscape. Tour lasts approximately 1.5-2 hours.

The annual Tucson Police Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, May 4, 2010 at 1900 hours.  The event will be held at the Tucson Police Memorial Plaza at 270 S. Stone, the main police headquarters.

The Memorial has been moved to the evening hours to take advantage of the cooler temperatures after sundown, ease parking problems and encourage the families and friends of our personnel, as well as members of the community, to attend.

The Memorial honors our officers who have died in the line of duty.  This is a solemn and moving event and is our way to honor their sacrifice and demonstrate to the surviving family members that we remember their loss.  Uniform for the Memorial is long sleeve shirt, tie and dress 8-point hat for all sworn members.
